Production Log

We planned to film the intro to George's film on Monday 3rd December, but I was sick so George and Patrick had to do it without me. The 2nd day of filming took place on Wednesday 5th December we met outside the location at 2:15, we started filming Patrick, who was playing the lead in the film, from opposite Hope House which is one of the boarding houses in our school. Originally we we're suppossed to film a little bit of a bus that usually stops outside Hope House but sadly we could not because the bus stops every 20 mins and because we had moved on to filming other scenes we did not time it right. After filming Patrick walking up from opposite the house we then filmed him at a traffic light and we did not have any problems filming this part. Then the hardest part came, this is when we had to get permission from one of the flat residents across the street to see if we could get film a scene from their window. We tried and tried but we we're unable to get to film this scene so we decided to leave it for another day.

Monday 3rd December:

This is an example of what they did on Monday a shot of Patrick leaving the Hope House area and making his way ont the driveway and this was filmed from one of the rooms.

Then we are going to do a match on action using this shot filming patrick from outside the hope house area:

Production Plan

We had to film the Scenes for the opening Title Sequence to one of the other Media students film. We used a Canon camera with the help of a Tripod stand, we also used Sony headphones for the main character. The location for the film was at Hope House, which is one of our school Boarding Houses, so we used one of the rooms as well. The main character he had to wear jeans and a jumper for the opening.

Title Sequence (Story Board & Music)

The soundtrack for my Title Sequence is Traumatized by Meek Mill, in the song it talks about loss and struggle and this would relate to my film seeing how one brother is lost as his life is taken by someone and struggle part relates to how the other brother struggles to survive. In the song there is a bit about revenge, this also relates to the film as the brother who has to struggle to survive wants to find the man who killed his brother and exact revenge on him. It is the more tragic emotional dimension to my film that I am trying to get across to my audience, so they just dont see as another ordinary generic Gangster film.

The track was taken down off YouTube because the account I got the link from is the subject of infringement and copyright, so it has been terminated.

Although I have found the original upload of the track which was posted by the original source for posting persons music.

Way Too Deep: Title Sequence

With my Title Sequence I am trying to convey with my images and background what my film is going to be like:

I am trying to show the use of guns as my film is Gangster and it portrays a  range of violence. I am also trying to show the setting with it being in a city.

With the use of music I will convey how my movie will differ from just an ordinary gangster film. I will use the song Traumatized by Meek Mill, it will bring a sense of emotion an dloss to the film so the viewers can get another interpretation of the film from the title sequence:

I want the audience to experience to new things in my title sequence, to get the idea that this isn't just your ordinary Gangster film. In the Title Sequence I am using the backgrounds with certain images and music which is my key factor in this Title Sequence. I want the audience to feel chills when they hear the soundtrack, to feel the emotion and get captured by it. I have frequently used cars in the background, this because I want the audience to see the idea of action and high speed chasing which is not seen alot in Gangster films.

Editing: Daniel Boydell
Casting: Robert Williams
Production Design: Nicholas Keen and Lisa Tanner

I have chosen most of these people for the crew of my film because most of them have worked on the set of the film Kidulthood (2006) and my film will be similar to that. I chose Justin Lin to direct the film because he has done a lot with action films in particular the Fast & Furious films, he can bring action similar to that into my film.

Paramount, Actors, Directors,

Paramount Pictures is a Film and Television Production/Distribution company. It is a very big Production/Distribution company. I would use them to produce and distribute my film because I know they can make it happen. They have produced many big films down the year e.g Avengers, Transformers etc.

Actors: Idris Elba for the role of Hector. I'd have Bow Wow (Shad Moss) playing Kevin and Romeo Miller playing the role of Micheal (Kevin's older brother). For the role of Melina I'd have Mila Kunis or Nathalie Kelly.

Director: I think I would go with Justin Lin because he's good with action.

How Could I Use Special Treats For My Film?

First of all I would use Special Treats Productions for my film seeing as it is Europes leading production company and I am mainly trying to target a British audience. I want to use Special treats for Electronic Press Kits, this so the press can have access to my actors, directors an producer so they could find out more about the film and promote my film to wider parts of the film industry. I could have an event in which Special Treats can help with planning as well as broadcasting it, for example I could throw a party where people and press could come and find out more about my Film, view character profiles sop they get an idea of how they will be like in the film, actors could be present to answer questions and give a little sneak peeak towards the film.

Cineworld, Picturehouse and My Film.

Cineworld has just bought the Picturehouse chain. They have done this because they have seen that Picturehouse is really profitable and they are trying to reach a greater audience.

Stephen Wiener, chief executive of Cineworld said: "This acquisition gives us an opportunity to accelerate our growth by reaching new audiences in a high value and growing part of the market."

Picturehouse's managing director Lyn Goleby said: "The unique character of Picturehouse cinemas will remain, and our team will continue to bring the widest range of film to customers."

I think some of the films shown at Cineworld might move in to Picturehouse as testing to see if it will make a profit, if more films from cineworld move there it could mean there won't be alot of older and foreign language films.

Special Treats Productions is an independant production company that work on media promotion. They also produce Electronic Press Kits and Press Junkets, which are events for press to promote a film, High profile programmes, news reports and documentaries for broadcast television.

How could I use Special Treats to promote my film?

Promotion: Extended

1. Synergy - The soundtrack for Kidulthood is Water Torture by Cee Why, I have 3 in mind that I could use for my film. One is Tony Story Pt.2 by Meek Mill, Traumatized also by Meek Mill and Use To Be by Meek Mill again.

Promotion and Marketing

For my film I have found 3 ways in which I can Promote and Market my Film..

1. Viral Marketing - this basically involves use of internet and social networks as well other media sources, this could be the best way seeing as more people are on the internet more often.

2. Synergy - use of soundtracks with artists. Soundtrack is based on film and it can play a key part to people finding more about a film if they are big on the artist/musician.

3. Posters and Press Reviews - Making a poster for the film and make it really appealing or eye-catching. If the film gets good reviews from the press it could spread the word and more people could become interested in the film and go see it.

Classification: Extended

Age Restriction: 15

-Drugs, I will be highlighting the misuse of easily accesible and highly dangerous drugs.
-Language, use of language will not be too strong, there will be some aggressive language but it will noot be frequently repeated.
-Violence, it will not be too strong or sadistic.
-Imitable Behaviour, may be present in the film but I will not focus too much or with great detail on the matter.

This is why my film is for people of aged 15 or above. I have used guidlines from BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) to help with classifying the film.

Classification & Target Audience

My film is classified as a Gangster film that involves a bit of drama. The age restriction I would say is from 15 to 18, particularly because I am trying to reach out to people in that specific age range as an informative process, it is also aimed at females as well as males. I would say Kidulthood is a good reference for this film seeing as I will also be targeting a British audience. I have used British Board of Film Classification to help classify my film http://www.bbfc.co.uk/ .

Here is The Kidulthood trailer:

Ordinary Gangster Films vs. My Film

I want my film, Way Too Deep, to be different from most gangster films. Gangster films consist of action such as killing, car chasing, men in fancy suits, rivalry between famillies, big houses. Films like Gangster Squad, American Gangster etc. I would say my films is more between the lines of films like Kidulthood and Get Rich or Die Tryin'. There is a tragic bit to my movie and there is a love story.

Narrative

Micheal and Kevin are two brothers, one who tries to do the right thing and one that is more destructive. They do drug distribution for a man called Hector. Hector gives them a job but something goes wrong they lose all of his drugs, Hector kills Micheal but fails to kill Kevin, who escapes.

Kevin tries to find a way to get to Hector, to avenge his brothers death, while keeping a low profile, he finds it complicated to keep a low profile seeing as Hector knows everyone because Hector is a very powerful man. Kevin finds a girl which complicates his situation more, Melina, because she works in one of his night clubs. Now Melina and Kevin have to watch who they trust and come to rely on. Hectors trying to close on Kevin and he's trying to close on Hector, there's alot of chasing down and shooting.

Kevin eventually finds a way to get to Hector, but has no idea that he has taken Melina. Now Kevin has to try and kill Hector without Melina being hurt. He becomes face to face with Hector who holds Melina at gun point and Kevin becomes nervous because he has gun that is pointed at Hector. Hector notices Kevin's scared and shoots him in his chest but is unaware that Kevin has a bullet proof vest on him, Hector lets go of Melina and then is about to kill her but as he is about to Kevin gets up and shoots him in the head.

Audience Research

I am now doing Audience Research on my film. I have asked a various amount of people on their opinions of my film e.g What Genre they think the film is? What they Like and Dislike about the film? Would they be interested in seeing it?

These are some of the responses I got:

''I'd say it belonged to a crime thriller genre. Good use of camera shots to create suspence. Maybe use a better camera next time.''

''I think it's about some sort of crime. I think it has alot of suspense and because of that I would want to see it, but the quality is annoying.''

''It looks cool. I like the whole thing with the gun.''

''It's smart and It's got alot of suspense.''

''I guess it's kinda like a (action) thriller.''

''I thought the individual ideas were pretty good, but for me, I felt that i didn't feel like the street scenes and the gun ones were related. I felt like I was looking at two different movies, but all in all it was good.

''I like the music in the back ground, it feels like there is some tension, I like the different pieces of film, I liked the gun, in between the rest, the quality of filming there is much better than the filming in the street, that's a bit annoying. It seems like it's gonna be a thriller.''

Most people thought it was a Crime/Thriller, which wasn't really what i was hoping for them to say. Although the Gangster genre I was hoping for does not fall too far from Crime/Thriller, which indicates I could be almost there. Some people did not like how I distorted the scenes a bit, but most people said that's what they liked most about the sequence. The idea of the gun in between the scenes of the two characters was good for all the people who watched the sequence. The Soundtrack everyone seemed to love, they seemed to love the fact that it brought up alot of tension and that is what I wanted. Most people would like to see the film if it was to be released, The suspense bit with the music and scenes was key to attracting people.

I might try to distort the scenes again and add more transitions to the sequence. The last bit of the soundtrack I would like to change a little. The eyes on the female lead in my film is still for me a problem, I am still trying to work my way around it. The quality of the sequence can be changed, its quite simple. All I need to do is convert the format of it to possibly High Definition (HD).

Film Idea

Two brothers, Micheal and Kevin, are on the opposite sides of life in terms of direction. Micheal has become incresingly interested and active in the drug world and has brought in Kevin to help him, but when a deal goes bad, someone has to pay. A tale of Action and Thriller, can be compared to films like Alpha Dog, Four Brothers and Waist Deep.

An example, Here is the Alpha Dog Trailer:
